Restoring a Worn Gold-Plated Watch

Luxury watch refurbished and replated in 24k gold

A gold-plated watch that has worn through looks finished. It almost never is.

Where watches wear first

Always the same places. Lugs, where the case meets the strap. Clasp and bracelet edges, which take constant handling. Case back and crown, from contact with skin. Bezel edges, from knocks. The pattern is predictable because wear follows friction, and it tells us what we are dealing with before the watch arrives.

Why it wore in the first place

Thin original plating. The most common reason by far. Factory plating on mid-market watches is frequently applied at well under a micron.

Skin contact and perspiration. A watch is worn against skin for hours a day — more contact than almost any other plated object.

Chemicals. Perfume, hand sanitiser, chlorine and cleaning products all attack a plated surface.

Age. Even good plating has a service life on a daily-worn watch.

What restoration involves

We strip the remaining plating, assess the case and bracelet beneath, prepare the surface, and replate.

Preparation is the work. A case that has been polished repeatedly over the years may have lost crispness at the edges, and plating will faithfully reproduce whatever is underneath — it hides nothing. Where we can improve the surface first we do; where damage is structural rather than cosmetic we say so before quoting.

The result usually beats the original

This is the part owners do not expect. Most worn watches were plated far too thinly to begin with. Our standard finish is 5 microns, and we can plate up to 10 microns — many times the deposit on typical factory plating. A watch that wore through in eighteen months, replated properly, is a different proposition.

You can change the finish

Restoration does not mean putting it back as it was. A watch originally in yellow gold can return in rose gold, platinum (applied as rhodium) or an antique finish. We work in 24k gold, 18k gold, rose gold and platinum, with mirror, brushed, satin and antique surface options.

A brushed finish on a case that was originally mirror-polished hides daily wear considerably better — worth considering if the watch is worn every day.

Goldgenie watch customisation prices

Customisation Starting price
Watch body and buckle From £480
Full watch, including strap or bracelet From £590

The prices above cover the precious-metal finish. Diamond setting is quoted separately. We work with VS1-grade natural diamonds or lab-grown stones, and price depends on the stones, the setting and the design.

One honest caveat

If the watch is a rare or collectable reference, originality may be worth more than condition. We will tell you before quoting rather than after.

Getting an assessment

Send photographs including close-ups of the worn areas, the clasp and the case back. Tell us the finish you are considering, and we will assess the watch before providing a quotation.

We customise watches from every major maker — Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Breitling, TAG Heuer, Audemars Piguet, Tudor, Longines and Seiko among them — along with Apple Watch and bespoke commissions. If your watch is not listed, send photographs and we will confirm what is possible.

We collect worldwide using insured DHL. UK clients are welcome to post their watch to us or drop it off in person at our London service office in Enfield. Outside the UK and the UAE, insured DHL collection and return are included in the agreed quotation.

Work on your own watch carries a three-year Goldgenie warranty, subject to applicable warranty terms and normal exclusions.
